The Gregory Park Baptist Church had its genesis in mission established by James Phillippo in the Passage Fort community in St. Catherine. Oral historical accounts indicate that the small building in which the people gathered was destroyed by the 1907 earthquake which ravaged sections of Jamaica and the few members now left without a gathering place, soon scattered.
Some of the early members originated from Gregory Park community located only a few miles away and the mission re-gathered some steam and in time met in a small wooden building on land in Christian Pen given by Aunt Maggie, the mother of the soon to be widely known, Miss Eda Cargill, JP. In 1985 Rev. Millwood died after a brief illness and the church continued under the care of Rev. Luther Gibbs, the Pastor of the Boulevard Baptist Church. It was during his brief tenure that the much need and longed for physical expansion took place. A new chapel was constructed and included bathroom facilities, a baptismal pool and small vestry areas. This was a major accomplishment for a still small congregation but the people had a mind to work and the leadership of Rev. Gibbs was both compelling and inspiring. By now the Phillippo Circuit was again reconfigured and the Gregory Park became Circuit of its own, now aligned with the Glade Church.
That building also housed the Baptist Elementary School which served the communities of Gregory Park, Christian Pen, Cumberland Pen, Lovemore Pen, Cedar Grove, Watson Grove and Naggo Head.
The Gregory Park community soon manifested the features of the now established free village system including a market, a school, railway station and a banana loading bay.
Under the leadership of Deacons David Brown and David Broadbell, the ministry continued and in 1951 hurricane Charley did extensive damage to the building which continued to house both house and school. In 1952 the Government built the Gregory Park Primary School and the church continued to meet at Christian Pen, its present location.
The church became part of the Phillippo Circuit and was served as an out-station until the coming of the Rev. Dr. J. Carter-Henry until his death in 1969. By this time the membership was about 60. Following the death of Dr. Carter-Henry the Phillippo Circuit was reconfigured to include Gregory Park, Sligoville, Cypress Hall, Claremont (Glade) and Phillippo and the Rev’d. Dennis Millwood assumed the pastorate in 1970 and served until 1985.
The church continued to grow and new opportunities for spiritual growth and ministry expansion were introduced and the Gregory Park congregation through the leadership of the Pastor, became more aware of and involved in the program of the Jamaica Baptist Union.
Additional deacons were appointed to meet the growing needs of the membership and the Gregory Park Church became known for its warm hospitality and caring nature.
